This unconventional 4,500 sq. ft. modern home was built to suit (and withstand) the playful nature of our clients. Dramatic architecture, refined finishes and state of the art systems are balanced by whimsical interventions, including a rope swing and full baseball pitch.

Forethought and planning were key to executing its structural complexities—transforming the existing traditional building into a modern plan with whole-house central atrium, on a challenging site with zero lot line and unstable Cole Valley soil.

The moment we met Design Line we clicked, and I could tell that their experience and pride in executing clean, crisp modern spaces was a great fit.

Honestly, we had a blast building our house and the process was incredibly satisfying…everyone on the crew was equally talented, helpful, hardworking and collaborative, and the project finished right on schedule. Design Line’s work is intricately thought out and beautifully detailed, and I love living in it.

We excavated under the existing house to shore up and waterproof the site and build a new seismically sound foundation, then worked upward—hoisting in steel moment frames, building shear walls and framing the atrium.

The three-story custom steel staircase wraps the light-filled interior volume; built in sections on site and welded in place. It culminates with a choice of two doors: into the concrete paneled office ‘pod’, nestled amidst skylights and clerestories, or out to the living roof and its panoramic view.
