A significant remodel on a challenging lot, this project required a highly iterative process to unearth site conditions and solve issues in the field.

In stripping down the existing building we found three different eras of construction—an original small house with two unattached additions. So the initial task was to unify and stabilize, for which we excavated, added weight-bearing piers and poured a new foundation for the expanded footprint.

The home’s new exterior is clad in old growth redwood reclaimed from Moffet Field, which transitions seamlessly into the double-height entry hall through floor-to ceiling glass. Heath tile wraps the living room fireplace, and adorns the kitchen and master bathroom.

A cantilevered steel catwalk spans the airy third floor expanse between the master bedroom and an outside deck with downtown views.
