Adjacent to the Mount Sutro Open Space public greenbelt, this refined property was designed to sit into the landscape and embody the owners’ love of nature, with careful attention to site sensitivity and the neighborhood scale.

The client’s objectives included an understated approach and the creation of indoor/outdoor spaces for reflection, with a focus on meadow landscaping that maximized bird habitat. Privacy is ensured by an architectural concrete perimeter wall covered in vines.

Designed to be low maintenance and low impact the home’s exterior materials include shou sugi ban siding, Equitone cement rainscreen panels and powder coated stainless steel. A verdant living roof garden features native plantings and a sophisticated leak detection system with root barriers to support significant growth.

The architecture progressively steps down the terraced, steep grade to meet the forest floor at the lowest level, with a patterned stone path that becomes increasingly less formal as it descends.

Expansive Blomberg glass openings connect the interior to the surrounding nature, which required significant structural work including excavation of the full footprint, drilled piers, heavy shoring and waterproofing and substantial steel.

Systems and details include an A/C minsplit with smartly hidden cassettes and slot registers, Homeworks, Lutron black-out and shear shades with blind boxes flush to the ceiling finishes, and thick doors with gaskets for improved acoustics.
