This fully detached home is tucked away on a cul de sac backing up to San Francisco’s Tank Hill parklands.

Completely transformed from the modest existing house on site, we added over 2,800 sq. ft. of space with new horizontal, second story and subterranean additions. For the latter we carved out and secured the hillside, then excavated to build a family room under the existing floor plate—adding significant waterproofing to safeguard from the uphill watershed.

The excavated chert was reused to lift the grade of the yard up to the finished bedroom level, so that the house is in essence fitted to the hillside. The interior stairs follow the grade, so when climbing them it feels as if you are ascending the hill. Opposing diaphragms in the standing seam roof and a roof deck offer breathtaking views all directions, to the parklands and the Bay.
